The Oude Kerk has its origins in the thirteenth century, making it the oldest building in Amsterdam. Stichting De Oude Kerk was established on 25 May 1955 with the aim of preserving the building and making it accessible to a wide audience. Since 2013, the Oude Kerk has been showing contemporary art exhibitions.
Annually, the Oude Kerk organizes an extensive program focusing on two major art commissions. These works are developed exclusively for the Oude Kerk taking the architectural and cultural-historical aspects of the building as a starting point. Each artist approaches the commission in a different way. This has led to a great diversity of productions, from extensive installations to subtle interventions. Recent solo exhibitions organized by the Oude Kerk include those of Aimée Zito Lema (2021), Em'kal Eyongakpa (2021), Susan Philipsz (2022) and Ibrahim Mahama (2023).
