Julian Hetzel creates performances, music and visual art. His work operates at the intersection of theatre, music and media, incorporating a political dimension and a documentary approach. Hetzel is the artistic director of Studio Julian Hetzel, a Utrecht-based organisation that produces and realises his artistic projects. His creations are internationally produced and have been presented in over 20 countries.

In 2017, Hetzel received the VSCD Mime Prize for The Automated Sniper. His productions All Inclusive (2018) and Mount Average (2020) were selected for the Dutch Theatre Festival. SELF represented the Netherlands at the Prague Quadrennial in 2019. That same year, Hetzel presented three works at the Biennale Teatro in Venice.

Born in the Black Forest (Germany), Hetzel studied visual communication at Bauhaus University Weimar. In 2013, he graduated from DasArts, an artistic research laboratory for new forms of theatre and performing arts. He is also a co-founder of the electropop band Pentatones.
