Three Times Left is Right is a new theatre production by Julian Hetzel, exploring the challenges of having opposite ideologies while living under the same roof. The production examines the relationship between populist right-wing and liberal left ideologies, inspired by the work of journalist Caroline Sommerfeld. Sommerfeld is considered an intellectual figure of the new right in Austria and Germany and is married to left-wing sociologist and theorist Helmut Lethen. Hetzel questions where totalitarianism meets both the left and the right, and whether we might learn something from this remarkable couple. Furthermore, Hetzel is interested in how the right appropriates and adapts the strategies of the left for its own ends.

With Three Times Left is Right, Julian Hetzel continues his long-running investigation into emotions, this time focusing on hate as a force behind right-wing radical thought, and love as a survival strategy in times of war. For this production, Hetzel collaborates with the Flemish acting duo Kristien de Proost (1972) and Josse de Pauw (1952). Three Times Left is Right will premiere on 17 May 2025 in Vienna during the Wiener Festwochen.
