Eline Arbo (Tromsø, Norway 1986) is Artistic Director at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam and a celebrated director, based in the Netherlands. After studying Directing at the Academy of Theatre and Dance in Amsterdam, she emerged as a distinctive voice in the theatrical landscape. Arbo is known for her powerful, feminist, and socially engaged productions, in which she weaves contemporary issues with classical narratives. In 2020, she directed Weg met Eddy Bellegueule, an adaptation of the novel by Édouard Louis, a production widely acclaimed as the best of the 2019/2020 season. For this work, she received the 2020 Regieprijs and the 2020 Toneelkijkersprijs in The Hague. The four actors in the production were collectively nominated for the Louis d'Or.
In recent years, she has directed several significant productions in the Netherlands, including De Uren (2021) by Michael Cunningham at ITA, De Jaren (2022) by Nobel Laureate Annie Ernaux (2022) at Het Nationale Theater, Penthesilea (2023) by Heinrich von Kleist and Prima Facie (2023) by Suzie Miller at ITA.
In 2024, Arbo's work includes Timerne, a Danish remake of De Uren, which premiered at Det Kongelige Teater in Copenhagen; her adaptation of Connie Palmen’s debut De Wetten, which premiered at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam; her English remake of De Jaren, which premiered at Almeida Theatre in London; and her play Haugtussa, created in collaboration with Nationaltheatret Oslo, which premiered at the Ruhrtriennale.
