The Ruhrtriennale is a prominent arts festival held annually in August and September in the Ruhr metropolitan region. Industrial heritage sites, such as former coking plants and engine houses from the mining and steel industries, take centre stage at the festival. The programme sits at the intersection of music theatre, drama, dance, performance, concerts, installations, and visual art.

A new artistic director is appointed every three years. For the 2024–2026 period, this role will be fulfilled by the Belgian theatre director Ivo Van Hove.
