The Stedelijk Museum, founded in 1895, is an institution dedicated to modern and contemporary art and design. The museum manages the collection of fine art and design of the City of Amsterdam that includes more than 90,000 objects, with works by leading artists such as Piet Mondriaan, Kazimir Malevich, Gerrit Rietveld and Marlene Dumas. The museum focuses on art, design and visual culture from the late 19th century to the present.
In addition to its permanent collection, the Stedelijk organizes various temporary exhibitions, lectures and educational programs. In recent years, the Stedelijk has organized important solo exhibitions by contemporary artists such as Carlos Amorales, Jon Rafman, Hito Steyerl and Anne Imhof. The museum is led by director Rein Wolfs and business director Margot Gerené.
In 2023, Buro Stedelijk was established as a new platform for emerging artists and designers, housed within the Stedelijk Museum itself. Led by curator Rita Ouédraogo, Buro Stedelijk serves as a bridge between the studio, educational institutions, galleries, and the museum. It is a multidisciplinary space where curators, artists, and other creatives have the freedom to develop and present new work, providing a fresh impetus to contemporary cultural production in Amsterdam.
