Festival d'Aix-en-Provence was founded in 1948, shortly after the theatre and film festivals in Avignon and Cannes. The festival has become France's largest opera festival and collaborates with international partners, including Covent Garden, The National Opera and Adelaide Festival. Festival d'Aix takes place annually in the month of July. Over a period of three weeks, operas and concerts can be seen at various theaters and locations in the city.
Pierre Audi took office as director in 2018 after leaving The National Opera. Since taking office, the festival has gradually expanded by programming more concerts and broadening the repertoire with both old works and contemporary creations. To expand the contemporary programming further, Audi created the Incises programme, exclusively for the development of new works. In 2021, Ammodo supported the critically acclaimed opera Innocence produced within Incises.
