Theater Rotterdam is a house for national and international theatre and is theatre, company and production house in one. The institution aims to create theatre at the intersection of genres and disciplines, giving expression to social issues and artistic sensibilities of our time. In 2020, Alida Dors was appointed artistic director. Upon taking office, Dors set a new course with polyphony and reciprocity as its basis. Theater Rotterdam's artistic vision can be summarised with the words ‘I am because of you’, inspired by the Ubuntu philosophy.

Theater Rotterdam works with a broad maker community consisting of: Alida Dors, Dalton Jansen, Erik Whien, Grande Loge, Khadija El Kharraz Alami, Mathieu Wijdeven, Nastaran Razawi Khorasani, Romana Vrede and collective Wunderbaum. They form the heart of the organisation and jointly shape the artistic direction.

Theater Rotterdam's productions have been positively received in recent years. According to the Nederlandse Toneeljury, The Story of Travis was among the most impressive theatre productions of the season (‘22-’23), as was Wunderbaum's The Clown Convention and La Codista and Slachthuis Vijf by Erik Whien. Wunderbaum won the German Oeuvre Prize Martin Linzer Theaterpreis (2022) and performance collective URLAND won the VSCD Mime/Performance Prize (2022) with De Gabber Opera.
