Manifesta was founded in 1996 in the Netherlands by (art) historian Hedwig Fijen. Manifesta was created in response to the political, economic and social changes after the end of the Cold War and the subsequent processes of European integration. The foundation organises nomadic European contemporary art biennials that are considered among the top in the international art world.
In recent years, Manifesta has grown into a socially engaged, bottom-up organisation with the aim of organising a biennial that has a lasting effect on the host city. Editions have included Rotterdam (1996), Ljubljana (2000), Frankfurt (2002), St Petersburg (2014), Palermo (2018), Marseille (2020), Pristina (2022) and Barcelona (2024). Ammodo supports a selection of artists who produce and present new work for and during Manifesta.
