Framer Framed started in 2009 as a travelling project with the aim to question the position of (transcultural) art in Dutch art institutions. Since 2014, Framer Framed has a permanent exhibition space, first in the Tolhuistuin in Amsterdam-North and currently in the purification hall of the former Oostergasfabriek in Amsterdam-East.
Framer Framed organises around ten exhibitions a year that are at the intersection of contemporary art, visual culture and politics. They present work by international artists active worldwide who relate to social issues such as globalisation, (post)colonialism, ecology and power relations. Framer Framed manages to engage many artists and curators who are prominent in the international discourse on inclusion, such as Lawrence Abu Hamdan, Ade Darmawan of Ruangrupa and Taring Padi.
Framer Framed has a number of collaborative partners in The Netherlands such as the Rijksakademie, De Ateliers, Van Abbemuseum, MAMA in Rotterdam, Productiehuis Nowhere and Public Art Amsterdam and abroad such as the Gwangju Biennale, Arts Council Korea and Atelier Picha from Lubumbashi (Congo).
