De Ateliers, founded by artists in 1963, is an international artists' institute that focuses on talent development in the visual arts. De Ateliers caters to relatively young artists and with its unique talent programme, focuses on individual creative practice in the studio. Since the 1990s, the institution has been housed in the former academy building of the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
Every year, De Ateliers offers twenty (ten Dutch and ten international) artists, who are at the start of their professional careers, a high-quality working environment in which they can develop themselves and their practice. In addition to studios and technical work spaces, De Ateliers offers professional guidance by experienced artists. On a weekly basis, mentors visit the artists and provide feedback on artistic development.
For artists, a working period at a postgraduate institution such as De Ateliers is of great importance for artistic development and building on their network. Well-known alumni include Marlene Dumas (1978), Joep van Lieshout (1987), Aernout Mik (1988), Natasja Kensmil (1998), Melvin Moti (2001), Dineo Seshee Bopape (2007), Giulia Cenci (2017) and Neo Matloga (2018).
