Composer Michel van der Aa is a pioneer in contemporary music and new technology. His work places strong emphasis on the theatrical and visual aspects of music, characterised by the fusion of music, theatre, opera and multimedia. Through inventive musical, cinematic and digital creations, Van der Aa invites audiences to step into alternative worlds.

As a composer, director and multimedia artist, he pushes the boundaries of classical opera, taking the genre into new dimensions. Van der Aa has received international acclaim; his work has been performed in over 45 countries and he has won numerous awards, including the Grawemeyer Award (2013), the Johannes Vermeer Award (2015), and the International Opera Award (2022) for Upload.
